Kraków in winter is truly magical. Snow often dusts the cobblestone streets of the Old Town. Furthermore, the air smells of mulled wine and roasted nuts. Visiting between November and February, however, means planning for the cold. You also need an efficient plan for a short 48-hour stay.

Warm streetlights and snow-dusted cobblestones set the magical tone for your 48-hour Kraków winter weekend itinerary.
This Kraków winter weekend itinerary is your perfect guide. It focuses on cosy indoor escapes. Additionally, it highlights the best seasonal food and historic sights. Get ready to explore Poland’s cultural capital.
When to Visit Kraków in Winter
Choosing when to go between November and February changes your trip.
- November: The city is generally quieter. Christmas lights often appear late in the month. Consequently, it’s a great time for budget-conscious travellers before the holiday rush. It’s also “Free November” at the Royal Castle (see Day 2!).
- December: This is peak magic. The Kraków Christmas markets are in full swing. The Main Square (Rynek Główny) is vibrant and festive. Therefore, you must book accommodation and secure flights to Kraków well in advance.
- January: The holiday crowds are gone. However, the Kraków weather is typically the coldest. This is the perfect month for cosying up in museums and cafés. You will find fewer queues.
- February: Days start getting slightly longer. You can often find great deals on travel. February is a chilly but beautiful month, especially with a fresh blanket of snow.

Getting Around the City
Kraków’s Old Town (Stare Miasto) is wonderfully compact. Therefore, walking is your best option. You can explore most sights in this itinerary on foot. Pack warm, comfortable, and waterproof boots.
For longer distances, like visiting Kazimierz, the tram system is excellent. It is efficient and easy to use. You can buy tickets at kiosks near the stops or on many trams using a card. Our full Kraków Transport Guide has all the details.

Discover majestic sights like St. Joseph’s Church in Podgórze as you begin your perfect 48-hour Kraków winter weekend itinerary.
Your Perfect 48-Hour Kraków Winter Weekend Itinerary
This plan is optimized for cold weather. It balances major sights with warm indoor breaks.
Day 1: Arrival, Market Magic, and Gothic Wonders
Morning (Arrival & Check-in): Arrive at Kraków Główny or the airport. First, head to your hotel to drop your bags. The Old Town and its surrounding area offers some of Kraków’s best places to stay.
1.00pm: Lunch at a Milk Bar: For lunch, find a Bar Mleczny (Milk Bar). These are traditional Polish cafeterias. They serve hearty, authentic, and very cheap food. It’s not fine dining. However, it is a perfect cultural experience. Order pierogi (dumplings) or a bowl of żurek (sour rye soup). This will warm you up instantly.

Explore the snowy Rynek Główny and St. Mary’s Basilica, essential stops for history and culture on your Kraków winter weekend itinerary.
2.30pm: The Main Square & St. Mary’s Basilica: Next, walk to the Rynek Główny. This is Europe’s largest and most stunning medieval square. The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) dominates the center. Spend some time browsing its stalls. They sell amber, woodcrafts, and souvenirs.
However, your main goal is St. Mary’s Basilica. You must go inside. The 15th-century wooden altarpiece by Veit Stoss is breathtaking. Its deep blue and gold interior is a magnificent indoor escape. Remember to listen for the Hejnał (bugle call) from the tower. It plays every hour on the hour.
St. Mary’s Basilica (Kościół Mariacki)
- Address: Plac Mariacki 5, 31-042 Kraków
- Hours (Tourist Entry): Mon-Sat: 11.30pm-6.00pm, Sun: 2.00pm-6.00pm
- Price: 18zł (for tourist entry to the main basilica and altar)

No Kraków winter shopping visit is complete without browsing the festive market stalls for local treasures like Bolesławiec pottery.
4.30pm: Christmas Market & Mulled Wine: As dusk falls, the square lights up. This is the perfect time to explore the Christmas Market. (The 2025 market officially kicks off on Friday, November 28, 2025). If visiting in December, read our full Christmas Market guide.
Browse the wooden stalls. You can buy handmade ornaments and sheepskin rugs. Most importantly, get a cup of Grzaniec Galicyjski (hot mulled wine). You could also try oscypek. This is a smoked cheese from the mountains, served hot with cranberry jam.
7.30pm: Dinner in a Medieval Cellar: For dinner, explore the side streets off the main square. You will find countless cosy restaurants. Many are located in historic medieval cellars. These brick-vaulted rooms are incredibly atmospheric and warm. (See our “Where to Eat” section below for more ideas).
9.30pm: Optional Nightcap: Finally, end your night with a local experience. Visit a pijalnia czekolady (chocolate ’drinking’ hall) for a thick, rich hot chocolate. Wedel, on the Main Square is the obvious choice. Alternatively, find a vodka tasting bar to sample Poland’s famous spirit.

Kick off the second morning of your Kraków winter weekend with a visit to the historic, snow-dusted Wawel Royal Castle.
Day 2: Royal History & Bohemian Charm
9.30pm: Wawel Hill & Cathedral: Start Day 2 at Wawel Hill. This complex is the heart of Poland’s national identity. First, visit the Wawel Cathedral. This is where Polish kings were crowned and buried. The interior is a stunning mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. You can also climb the Sigismund Bell Tower for a great (but cold!) view.
Wawel Cathedral
- Address: Wawel 3, 31-001 Kraków
- Winter Hours (Nov-Mar): Mon-Sat: 9.00pm-4.00pm, Sun: 12.30pm-4.00pm
- Price: 25zł (includes Cathedral, Royal Tombs, & Bell Tower)
11.00pm: Wawel Royal Castle: Next, escape the cold inside the Wawel Royal Castle. You must buy tickets for specific exhibitions. Our detailed guide to Wawel Castle explains all the ticket options.
Local Tip (“Free November“): If you are visiting in November, you’re in luck! Wawel Castle participates in “Free November,” meaning admission to permanent exhibitions (like the State Rooms) is free. You must still book a free Wawel ticket online in advance, as they run out.
For a short winter visit, we recommend focusing on the State Rooms. These grand halls show the castle’s Renaissance splendor. The tapestries and ornate ceilings are remarkable. Time slots sell out quickly, even in winter. Buy tickets in advance or, better yet, take part in a guided tour. I personally recommend this excellent guide to the Wawel Royal Apartments.
Wawel Royal Castle (State Rooms)
- Address: Wawel 5, 31-001 Kraków
- Price (Dec-Feb): 49zł (for State Rooms)
- Price (November): Free (Book free ticket in advance)
1.30pm: Lunch near Kanonicza Street: Walk back down from the hill via Kanonicza Street. It is one of Kraków’s oldest and most beautiful streets. Find a quiet restaurant here for a relaxing lunch.

Take a snowy evening stroll through Kazimierz and soak up the festive atmosphere at Plac Wolnica, where the winter light displays truly shine.
3.00pm: Explore Kazimierz (The Jewish Quarter): In the afternoon, take a 15-minute walk south to Kazimierz. This is the historic Jewish Quarter. It has a unique, bohemian atmosphere. You will find historic synagogues, small art galleries, and quirky shops. It feels very different from the Old Town. Walk around Plac Nowy. This square is the area’s beating heart, famous for zapiekanki (a type of Polish open-faced baguette).
6.00pm: An Evening of Culture: As your weekend ends, choose a final indoor activity. Kraków is famous for its classical music. You can often find Chopin concerts in historic townhouses. Alternatively, search for a Klezmer music concert in Kazimierz. GetYourGuide is a useful resource for concert tickets.
Another great option is a Kraków food tour. This is a fantastic way to sample many different Polish dishes and learn about the culture. We like this introduction to the varieties of Poland’s dishes and vodkas in a handful of different venues.
8.00pm: Final Dinner: For your final dinner, try a modern Polish restaurant. Many innovative chefs in Kazimierz and the Old Town are re-imagining traditional recipes. It is a fantastic end to your trip.

Bukovina Thermal Baths offers warm mineral pools ideal for winter relaxation, making it a perfect indoor day trip from Kraków during cold months.
Have More Time? (Top Day Trips)
Do you have an extra day? Two sites near Kraków are unmissable. Both are perfect for winter, as they are (mostly) indoors or underground.
- Bukovina Thermal Baths: Two hours from Kraków, Termy Bukovina is a hot water spa complex on the edge of a forest. In addition to the pools, there is a wellness centre and sauna, food and drink facilities, and plenty of fun for kids. Termy Bukovina is open year-round, and there’s nothing like the experience of warm-water swimming outside on a snowy day.
- The Wieliczka Salt Mine: This is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You journey deep underground. You will see entire chapels, statues, and even a lake, all carved from rock salt. The English-language “Tourist Route” tour costs 143zł. It is a truly unique place. You can book Wieliczka tickets and transport from Krakow in advance.

Rynek Underground museum showcases Kraków’s medieval history through immersive exhibits, making it an essential indoor winter activity in the Old Town.
